This room has been a long time in coming. The main reason is that we couldn’t figure out what to do with it! It is a little too big (which I understand is a good problem – but can be problematic when trying to hang a small picture on a big wall!) He’s a boy so we wanted it to be manly, yet fun. Bright, yet classic. What to do? The first piece of the puzzle came together when we saw Fixer Upper’s basketball backboard for a boy’s room. This was our interpretation. We made it more heavy-duty so boys could actually hang off of it. Click here for the tutorial.
The second piece came together when we found these cruddy old lockers in the garage at an estate sale. No one noticed them because everyone else was scourging through the house for the nice stuff. Me? I’m out in the garage looking for the deals. 😉
LOCKERS AFTER: (Thank you Rust-Oleum!)
With these two pieces of inspiration, we were able to move ahead and get it done for my boy’s 12th birthday. We wanted a room that was fun for his friends, a place he could play basketball when it was too cold outside, but was still classic enough to transition into a teen bedroom.
This is the focal point wall (& my favorite part of the room!) Our kid’s rooms are in the lower level, so having a natural wood really helped warm up the space. I couldn’t believe that the brilliant (almost purply) blue wasn’t too much. That was a little scary. I adore the wood overlay! Great job, hubby! (We used 12x12x1 pine boards, stained them with Cabot Stain in Bark Mulch and nailed them into the wall.) The giant S was found at Hobby Lobby. The bench tutorial is here.
Next up, we jazzed up his bed, which was built for him a few years ago by daddy. We added the natural wood trim and the vintage racket & bat, and the sign.
Under the bed, we have dueling desks for homework and Legos. We also have a nice long display shelf for his Legos.
The flooring is awesome, it makes it feel like you are in a gym. It is laying right on top of the carpet and was purchased at Menards.
