We are big into budgeting here at the Stone household. As we have learned to budget through the years, it really helps you to pick up on things where we previously wasted a bunch of money. We used to think that we don’t really have an option. But, budgeting helped us to research and find the best deals out there, saving us a ton of money in the process. This happened when we were searching for a great cell phone for our kids. I know they wanted all the bells and whistles, but I just wanted them to have a phone and be safe. So, we found the BEST cell phone plan for kids out there! We’ve used this plan for a year and couldn’t be happier with the phone or the plan.
First of all, finding a phone. I wasn’t about to spend a lot for their first phone. For one, I don’t trust them. 😉 j/k What if they lose it or drop it? That’s too big of an investment for them. If you have an old phone that you can pass down to your kids, this is a great deal: Check it out here. I had to keep up on my search. Eventually, we found an awesome deal on a great little phone. My kids have been using this phone for almost a year. It works great for what we wanted; a simple, super-cheap phone that works and a plan that doesn’t add another $60/month to our budget. Is that too much to ask?
HERE IS THE BEST CELL-PHONE PLAN FOR KIDS ON THE PLANET:
At CVS, I purchased a TracFone. Originally it was $20, but it was on sale for $10. whaaat?! I liked that price point mainly because I didn’t know if my kids would lose the phone within the first month. But, believing the adage, you get what you pay for, I wasn’t sure if it would actually work. For $10 it was worth a try! It is now a year old and is going strong! (The brand is Alcatel)
- It keeps a charge for DAYS. Literally days! (waaaaay longer than my iPhone!)
- The reception is fantastic.
- Texting is easy.
- COST. COST. COST. COST.
- Quick & easy set-up.
- They email you to remind you to purchase more minutes if you do the Pay-As-You-Go plan.
- It doesn’t take great photos.
- They can’t download a bunch of apps, just doesn’t have the memory for that.
- I haven’t figured out how to track them and I can’t send their messages to my phone (like you can if your entire family has iPhones).
- You can’t purchase a cute little cover.
THE TRACFONE PLAN WE CHOSE:
(this plan is under Pay-as-you-go – it takes a little digging on their site, but it is there!)
THIS WAS OUR TOTAL COST FOR THE CELL PHONE & PLAN for 3 months: $34.00
- $10.00 for the phone
- $19.00 service plan for 3 months (includes 180 minutes talk, 180 texts, 180 MG data)
- We also purchase the $5/1000 texts (because that is what we use the most).
After you choose your plan and click add to cart, it will take you to another screen where you get have the option to add the $5 for 1000 texts or $10 for additional data.
Total spent on the tracfone in the first 3-month period: $35.00 = $11.66 per month!
OUR TOTAL SPENDING ON OUR PLAN without the phone cost:
Now that we’ve purchased the phone, we only spend $25 per 3 months = $8.33 per month
Oh, and if that isn’t a good enough deal already? I saved an additional 11% on my refill with Ebates! (p.s. if you aren’t already an Ebates member, you will receive an additional $10 just for signing up!)
- $25 refill for 3 months
- -2.75 (Ebates)
- / 3 months
- = $7.41 per month!
If you would like a nicer phone:
Motorola Moto X phone enabled for TracFone. This is a fantastic deal for $20!
Bonus, you can get cute cases, too!
The Gizmo Pal from Verizon Wireless. This is a fantastic option that Verizon has on the market for kids that are too small to keep track of a phone. The phone retails for $75. The monthly contract cost is just $5/month. This is a wearable watch that allows you to call the watch (& them to call you). You can track your child on your phone and choose to be alerted if they go outside the GPS set boundaries. Love it! (We have not used this product, but it has received great reviews.)
