Sometimes the wheels fall off at dinner time. Anyone living with “the littles” will know what I am talking about. Dinner time is really set-up for the perfect storm. The conditions are right, all it takes is a little something to get the stormy winds blowing around the dinner table. By dinnertime, I’m tired, short-tempered and a little testy. The kids are wound-up. Dad is still thinking about work. No one is able to have a decent conversation. Usually, my kids just sit there sticking out their tongues or making random noises. Repeating everything anyone says? ugh…I guess we all need a little help to get out of the rut of “Let’s see, do you want me to bore you about cleaning or do you want to take a turn and bore me about your job?”
When we took my daughter to the American Girl Doll Cafe for her birthday a couple weeks ago, they had fun little conversation starters on our table. We used them and enjoyed it so much! We talked about things that we dream about, fear and desire. We would have never tackled all the topics we did, if left to our own devices. I realized then that we all want to engage with each other on deep and meaningful levels but we are also dealing with our own limitations. So, what can we do that helps?
Here is a great game that you can use to get the conversational juices flowing. By the way, many people don’t use this as a game but as conversation starters instead. They have couples, family, teen, kid, and christian versions. Whatever place you are in in life, there is an Ungame for you! Try it out and then let me know if you loved it, too!
I hope you enjoy this resource for family &/or couple time! Do you also have trouble having meaningful conversations with your family? What do you do that helps? Shout it out in the comments below – I would love to learn from you!
