What are your biggest budget-busters? Shopping & eating out, right? You probably aren’t going into debt over putting too much into savings! ha! Me, neither! But, I did find an amazing way to save an incredible amount of money (anywhere between 5 – 20 %) on almost all major stores and restaurants that most of us enjoy.
Discounted Gift Cards!
I was tasked by all the parents of my daughter’s class, to purchase a gift card for the teacher. I was originally going to spend the $100 I had received from the parents to purchase a $100 gift card. But, I had seen gift cards at Costco for the American Girl doll store that were 20% off and that got me thinking… I wonder if I can search and find a discounted gift card for this particular store?
I found an egiftcard online, at the website GCSpread. The price was $79 for a $100 gift card. That’s a savings of 21%! Whoo-hoo! I love being able to stretch those dollars a little farther, so she will have more to spend. 🙂
Then, I realized, I’ve had “gift cards” filed under “gift ideas” in my brain. There is no reason I shouldn’t take advantage of these awesome deals, too! I generally plan a least a day ahead when/where our family is going to eat out. I know when I am going to go to a particular store to shop. Why not purchase an egift card and save that 5-20% right off the top? So, I searched for stores/restaurants that I regularly shop at…almost all of them were there, with substantial savings!
GCSpread has gift cards for Starbucks, Home Depot, Target and many more! The AMC Cards are 20% off, at the time of this post. That’s an awesome bargain, because last I checked, movie theaters weren’t offering sales. 🙂 From now on, I am doing no shopping or eating out until I find out if they have a gift card online. They even have Chipotle cards! C’mon! (I’m sorry, but my nerdy-money-saver-self is pretty excited about this!)
Just a note: When you purchase an e-giftcard, you will be printing out the voucher. (i.e. you will not receive a physical gift card.) But, they work exactly the same and generally you can use them for purchases online or in the store. GCSpread does offer physical gift cards as well. You just need to make sure to check to see which item you are purchasing.
OTHER DISCOUNTED GIFT CARD SITES:
This is a really popular site and it has been featured on CNN, Mint.com, NBC, ABC, Fox News, etc. It looks like it has equally as great deals as GCSpread and I feel like the site was a little more user-friendly. 🙂 Again, you may purchase physical or egiftcards. The turnaround for an electronic voucher is approx. 1 day.
GIFT CARD BIN This is probably the biggest seller of discounted gift cards out there. They have an amazing variety of cards with great deals.
GIFT CARD GRANNY Love the name! 🙂 Not as huge a selection as Cardpool, but great deals.
RAISE This site looks sharp and the nice thing about this site is they also offer an app, so you can purchase your egiftcard from your phone. Remember, it can take 24 hours to receive your electronic voucher or egift, so you can’t purchase the voucher immediately before making a purchase. But, it is more convenient than having to print it out at home on your computer. I would say the discounts are not as deep as they are on GCSpread or Cardpool.
Raise’s turnaround time and terms: (taken directly from their site)
- EGift cards can be redeemed online only. They are sent to your Raise account within 24 hours.
- Voucher Vouchers can be printed and redeemed in store. They are sent to your Raise account within 24 hours.
- Physical gift cards can be redeemed in store. They are delivered by USPS to your shipping address within 3-14 business days.
GIFT CARDS ON EBAY:
There are sellers of discounted gift cards on Ebay. I did a quick search and a few deals popped up such as a $100 gift card for $88. But, there were also sellers listing Target gift cards for the same amount as the gift card was worth + shipping. I have no idea why anyone would purchase this? Just be aware of what you are buying and make sure it is from a reputable seller. I feel, why waste the time searching on Ebay, when you can purchase any card you would like on a dedicated site?
