These are under the money smart tab because they are so darn economical. But, they are also fun to make and great for a beginning sewing project. Here is the easy-peasy tutorial of these awesome napkins.
I purchased two sets of fat quarters, which are quilting squares. I chose two sets that were complimentary in color so I could do two sided. These napkins are fantastic. For everyday, one-ply would be just fine.
1. First, we matched up our fat quarters, laying them wrong side out, because that is how we will sew them up.
2. We laid our pieces of fabric right sides facing in. We will flip them inside out after sewing (almost) all the way around the square. You could trim the fabrics to be exactly matching. We didn’t, because we would be flipping them inside out after sewing around the edges.
This is a birds-eye view of my eight-year old sewing her first set of cloth napkins.
3. After going almost all the way around the square, we stopped. Pull the fabric through the hole and then do a finishing seam, which also sews up the hole you pulled your fabric through.
We’ve been using these for weeks now. They wash up like a dream – just a quick spray of Resolve on any food stains. Don’t be scared to use them. Don’t wait for a special occasion. We use them every night for family dinner.
