I am just an ordinary Christian that doesn’t know much about Mark Driscoll. If you don’t know him, he was the founding pastor of a thriving church in a hard-to-church area, Seattle, Washington. He recently was forced to resign his church due not to outsiders attacks, but attacks from within the body of Christ. Let me get this straight, I don’t know much about his theology. I don’t know him personally. I have never heard him speak or attended his church. I have no personal connection to him at all.
What I do know is, the recent attacks on Mark Driscoll by the church itself, go against the very teaching of the word of God. Since, Mark Driscoll has been forced to resign, the church that he led, has since shut down as well. Let me ask you, do you think God’s will and purpose has been done in this situation?
First of all, I see a common principle in the word of God, that we are not to attack the leaders that God has placed over us. Even if they are ungodly leaders, we are instructed to pray for them. God sets up leaders and God takes them down. He is their judge and we are not.
I Tim. 2:1-4 (NIV) I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
Hebrews 13:17 – Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.
Romans 13:1 – Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
Daniel 2:21 – He changes times and seasons;
he deposes kings and raises up others.
He gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to the discerning.

Secondly, we are not to divide the body of Christ.
What witness are we to unbelievers when we devour our own?
Romans 16:17-18 – I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.
Mark 3:24-25 – If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
John 17:21 – that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
I John 2:9 – Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness.
I could go on and on…have we forgotten how God dealt with Aaron and Miriam? If Pastor Driscoll is in the wrong, then I trust God to deal with him. It is not my place. If God deals with us, he does it for our good, to bring us to repentance. That should be the focus of this entire situation. Instead it feels like a witch hunt, as the picture above demonstrates. I am deeply saddened by the disunity and judgement which has brought down a Pastor/writer/speaker, and now a thriving church. He is a unique person, someone who was doing things differently and connecting with his very unique audience.
This article is not so much about Mark Driscoll, as it is showing the total lack of an understanding of unity and what it means to be a part of the body of Christ. Unity doesn’t mean uniformity. We are all created for our specific role in the kingdom. Just as Jesus, who ate with sinners, and John the Baptist, who was a wild-man in the desert had different methods, they understood that they believed in the same God. Jesus himself corrected the disciples when they were intolerant and rebuked someone who wasn’t “with them.” But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me. 40″For he who is not against us is for us. Mark 9:39-40 NIV
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT:
For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” 15But if you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.
16But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. 19Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
25If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. 26Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.
I encourage you to live in unity, to pray for the unity of your local church, and for the entire body of Christ.
Blessings to you!
