This Sunday, I was teaching in the Nursery in our church. I happened to be wearing my “cool” jeans, you know, the ones with the holes in them? A girl, about 2 years old asked, pointing to one of the holes, “Who did that?” I told her, “Nobody, I bought them this way.” Oh, my…if you could have seen the distain on her face. I’m sure she was thinking, “What kind of idiot…?” 😉 Which leads me to the topic of really listening to your kids and what they are thinking, because obviously, they don’t think like we do. They don’t realize how cool those jeans really are! And, they get stressed-out about things we would never would. Which is why I think making New Year’s Resolutions is not just a fun activity, but making is actually a very important way to listen to your kids.
To be honest, I get totally geeked out about New Year’s Resolution-making. Why? Maybe because I love the “clean-slate” feeling. But, even more than that, I treasure the stepping back from my to-do list to think about if I am living the life I want to live. I wrote a post last year about how I make my New Year’s Resolutions now. I hope this helps, if you don’t know where to go beyond the get-fit-save-money-lose-weight goals.
I used to think New Year’s Resolution-making was solely an “adult” activity and never involved my kids in it. But, as they are getting older, I realize that they need the time to process the previous year and the opportunity to talk about how their life is going (& even better, what they dream of it becoming!) It’s a pretty awesome experience as a parent to take a peek into those little noggins!
Just ask the right questions and then sit back and listen. Try, try, try not to say AN.Y.THING. I’ve gotta admit, this is where I struggle! Try not to correct their opinions, even if they are totally wrong! remember, the jeans?! hello! because the goal is to hear their thoughts.
Here are some fun printables that will help you get going on this activity with your kids. I hope you enjoy this and learn something new about your family.
