Don’t be fooled by the picture above. We don’t normally look this adorable sitting around eating cupcakes on teeny-tiny pink chairs! Everything in that picture is staged, from the clothes, to the cupcakes! But, it isn’t the real us. My kids destroy the house just by waking up in the morning. Underwear is left everywhere. Usually in the living room. It’s a classy look, I’ll admit it. 😉 By the time they’ve been up for a half hour, my resolve to be patient, loving and kind is usually long gone.
“Thank you for leaving that out, for me to put away…grrrr….again! I mean, seriously, it isn’t enough that I clean the whole house, do all the cooking, laundry, everything…and no one can even pick up their bowls and put them in the sink??”
This is what is going on inside my head at any hour of the day, I am embarrassed to admit. Do you struggle with those feelings as well? Why do we act out when we feel like we are unappreciated or doing too much? Is it a competition? Are we secretly keeping score or trying to make everything “fair?”
Or, are we looking for big things? Are we looking for a missions trip to really give of ourselves? Isn’t it funny we can sacrifice for missions but we can’t for our family?
Hannah Moore writes, “We are apt to mistake our vocation by looking out of the way for occasions to exercise rare and great virtues, and by stepping over the ordinary ones that lie directly in the road before us.”
So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.
Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.
Love doesn’t strut,
Doesn’t have a swelled head,
Doesn’t force itself on others,
Isn’t always “me first,”
Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
Puts up with anything,
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.
