This year, our family is going on a massively insane road trip. We will be covering more than 1/2 of America. Here’s what our trip is going to look like. Insane, right?
Because of this, I’ve gone a little bit OCD on organizing our car. I don’t want to live out of a dirty, cluttered and overpacked car for weeks. This could be a little bit of wishful thinking, but I figure, I can’t over-prepare on this.
This post lists my favorite items I have found for a mommy-sane road trip. I hope you enjoy the ideas. Please keep coming back as I will be sharing some printables for planning, organizing and your enjoyment for your family vacation this summer.
6 Items You Should Take on a Family Road Trip:
My first idea I learned from my super-organized aunt & uncle. When they travel, they never use suitcases. Instead they pack in clear totes. How awesome is that? They stack easily and you can find everything at just a glance. Our method will be, pack in the 3-drawer plastic organizers below. Then, pull out just what we need and put it into the overnight bag. I can’t handle the thought of hauling everything in and out of each hotel every night. (obviously, we aren’t using the casters.) Our SUV handled 3 side-by-side. (By the way, it worked way better than I dreamed it would. Never using a suitcase again for a road trip!)
This is how we packed with them:
I also purchased this toiletry bag to easily pack and haul our toiletries in and out. But, I have another one that has larger mesh compartments. I will be using this to pack all of the dog accessories – leash, doggie bags, treats, collapsible water bowl.
I purchased this behind-the-seat organizer to help ensure that all the kids stuff stays off the floors. Room for iPad, pens/pencils, books, water bottles, snacks and lots more. This is so well-made, I recommend it highly.
I love this laundry bag! It’s a backpack with thick straps and a drawstring top.
This sweet organizer is actually for diaper bags. But, I love the smallish size, so we will be using this on the seat between the kids. We will use it to organize movies, books, camera, go-pro, kleenex, wet wipes, band-aids and their spending money.
How perfect are these storage clipboards for the road? They hold pens, papers, workbooks, all the while providing a nice flat surface to write on.

P.S. I thought of two more things that made our trip fantastic. The first was seat cushions. Instead of purchasing expensive ones, we used our outdoor seat cushions. We never had sore bottoms! 🙂 The 2nd thing was I ordered a box of baby wipes (unscented) from Amazon. I stuffed them in my glove compartment and anywhere else I had a little space. They were lifesavers!
