Do you know the best way to teach your child compassion for others? Let them see hurt. Tell them about pain. Explain to them that not all people have the privilege of going to school, living in a safe community or having a place to sleep. After you let them see the need, let them get involved in a solution. Kids are amazingly big-hearted, generous, creative and have energy to burn. Show them how they can make a difference. They don’t have to solve the world’s problems, be a superstar, or give away millions. Making a difference in one life is amazing! Being able to send one child to school or clothe a needy family or give socks to the homeless, it’s all awesome & life-changing to that person who is on the receiving end!
Compassion Experience – Teach your children what it is like to grow up in a poverty-stricken country without leaving home. Interactive experiences allow them to experience other people’s pain. This is hosted by Compassion International at area churches. Click on the link to find out where it is located in your area. The events are free & family-friendly!
The humanitarian crisis is so real and yet most of us do nothing. I am guilty of this myself. I feel so overwhelmed by all the need in the world that I end up doing nothing. But, to this boy my prayers and some small financial gift would go a long way. He and his family are now homeless, they will need basic essentials like food, water, clothing and medical care. Who will give them to him? Only organizations that have been on the ground in Syria know how to care for these people. Don’t worry that you don’t have a lot to give. If we all would give just a little, but actually give, what an awesome gift for these hurting people.
ORGANIZATIONS THAT HELP:
Sponsor a child from World Vision. This is a quality organization that connects you with children that need support in developing countries. It’s a monthly commitment financially. The best thing about it is that your child can write letters and build a friendship with your sponsor child.
World Vision – this great organization is also helping with the humanitarian crisis’ & starvation in places like South Sudan and Syria. Your donations can make a HUGE difference in the lives of the refugees.
Volunteer with World Vision – here are great activities that you can do to physically help World Vision make a difference in the world.
World Relief – This fantastic organization works to support refugees in their struggle. For over 70 years, World Relief has partnered with churches, communities, and governments to bring sustainable change to vulnerable communities around the world. There are many simple ways to get involved as a church or as an individual. You can set up an apartment for a new refugee family, welcome them to America with a meal, to picking them up at the airport for their first time in America, to speaking and advocating for refugees, to mentoring youth on a weekly basis. All levels of volunteering and giving are gratefully accepted.
The Ronald McDonald House – This awesome charity allows families to stay close when a child is hospitalized. Can you imagine trying to stay in a hotel for months at a time, while caring for your sick child? The Ronald McDonald House is a blessing to many families! How you can help? Make a homemade meal or cookies for the families. Donate your time to greet families. Host an activity or craft. Lots of fantastic ways to get involved! These pictures are from our time at the Ronald McDonald house in our community.
I hope this post is an encouragement to you. I don’t want to beat you over the head or make you feel guilty. I’m just frustrated with myself for being too busy/distracted/unaware and thought you might be feeling that way, too. This is just a small sample of great organizations that are helping people all over the world.
Try not to get overwhelmed,
but do for one what you wish you could do for everyone.
